Why Thumbtack Refunds Come as Account Credit, Not Cash

July 11, 2026

You win a lead dispute, Thumbtack approves it, and you feel like you just got your money back. Then you check your card statement and nothing shows up. That is because Thumbtack refunds do not default to cash — they default to account credit, a balance you can only spend on more Thumbtack leads. For most pros that distinction never registers until cash flow gets tight. Here is exactly how it works and how to get real money back when you are eligible.

The default is credit, and it stays that way unless you act

When a refund is approved, Thumbtack sends it to your account balance by default so you can use it to buy more leads. Nothing lands back on your credit card automatically. If you do nothing, that approved refund simply becomes spending power inside the platform — money that can only ever leave Thumbtack in the form of more leads.

You can see these balances yourself. In the Thumbtack Pro app, open the Profile tab, tap the gear icon, go to Payments, tap "View your balance and charges," then open the "Refunds & credits" tab. That is where approved refunds pile up as credit if you never convert them.

Why credit-by-default matters for your cash flow

Account credit is not the same as cash, and treating it like cash is how contractors quietly lock money into a platform they were trying to get a refund from. If you disputed a batch of bad leads because the platform was already burning your budget, converting those refunds straight back into more leads defeats the point.

Credit also removes your leverage. Cash in your bank can cover payroll, materials, a truck payment, or a slow week. Credit can only buy Thumbtack leads. For a small operation running thin margins, that difference is real — an approved $200 refund that sits as credit is $200 you cannot spend on anything except the exact thing you were trying to spend less on.

How to request a cash refund instead

You can get the money back on your original card, but you have to ask — and there is a tight deadline. After your refund request is approved, contact Thumbtack within 10 business days and tell them you want the refund sent to your original form of payment instead of account credit.

A few rules to know before you count on it. The refund can only go back to the original card you paid with — Thumbtack will not send it to a different card or account. Once the cash refund is approved, it typically takes 5 to 7 business days to process and land back in your bank. And the 10-business-day clock starts at approval of your refund request, not at the original charge, so do not sit on the decision.

What can never be cashed out

Not every balance is eligible to come back as cash. Courtesy credits, prepaid lead packages, and promotional balances cannot be refunded to your payment method — they are credit-only by design. If Thumbtack gave you a goodwill credit or you bought a discounted lead package, that money stays inside the platform no matter what.

This is worth remembering when a support rep offers a "courtesy credit" to resolve a complaint. It resolves the ticket, but it is not the same as getting your money back. A courtesy credit is a coupon for more Thumbtack; a card refund is your cash returned.

Mind the 45-day window too

The cash-refund step only exists after a refund is approved — and approval depends on you disputing in time. For most situations you have 45 days from the charge date to request a refund at all. Miss that window and there is nothing to convert to cash, credit or otherwise.

So the full sequence is two deadlines, not one: dispute the bad lead within 45 days of the charge, then, once it is approved, request the cash refund within 10 business days. Skip either step and the money defaults to credit or disappears entirely.

The takeaway

Winning a Thumbtack dispute is only half the battle. If you want cash rather than more leads, you have to take a second, time-boxed action after approval. Log every dispute-worthy lead the day it happens, dispute inside 45 days, and the moment a refund is approved, decide immediately whether you want it as credit or cash — because after 10 business days that choice is made for you.

RefundMyLead handles the hard part: matching each bad lead to the right refund reason and writing the dispute in the structure Thumbtack support actually approves, so more of your requests get to the approval stage where the cash-versus-credit choice is even yours to make.
